The only "attempted murder" in this case was done by the policeman making an arrest. If folks wonder why there were so many stories of sheriffs getting smoked in the old west, this is why -- criminal kops have been around a long, long time. At least with frontier justice, there was at least some vengeance instead of just getting raped and killed by the local bosses at their whim.
