Interesting developments in the "Quad" πŸ”—

Yesterday I posted about the China-Pak alliance RE OBOR. Sounds like the US is probably gonna juice up the Baloch separatists in response. This would jive with the recent deterioration in Anglo-Pak relations.

The amiable Joe Stiglitz says that whenever there is a "spillover"β€”my ugly dress offending your delicate eyes, sayβ€”the government should step in. A Federal Bureau of Dresses, rather like the one Saudi Arabia has. In common with Thaler and Krugman and most other economists since 1848, Stiglitz does not know how much his imagined spillovers reduce national income overall, or whether the government is good at preventing the spill. I reckon it's about as good as the Army Corps of Engineers was in Katrina.

Thaler, in short, melds the list of psychological biases with the list of economic imperfections. It is his worthy scientific accomplishment. His conclusion, unsupported by evidence?

Assad. Meanwhile the Turks are getting their asses handed to them by the Kurds. They're gonna have to do a full-blown invasion to succeed.

Surveillance Valley πŸ”—
1518346264

I looked around the room in amazement. This was the heart of a supposedly progressive San Francisco Bay Area, and yet the city planned on partnering with a powerful intelligence contractor to build a police surveillance center that, if press reports were correct, officials wanted to use to spy on and monitor locals. Something made that scene even stranger to me that night. Thanks to a tip from a local activist, I had gotten wind that Oakland had been in talks with Google about demo-ing products in what appeared to be an attempt by the company to get a part of the DAC contract.

Michael Lewis on the Trump/Bannon experience πŸ”—
1518346033

He finally gets it. Trump got elected because he tapped into the anger and fear Bannon sees is stewing in the electorate since the screw-job in '08. Unfortunately, Trump wasn't self-aware enough to figure that part out, it seems. To be fair, since he is himself one of the bailout queens, his blindness to this is understandable.

The security apparatus is always looking for blackmail material, and they don't care if that means "colluding" with foreign powers. But all the people who say we must trust the CIA when it claims Trump has colluded will totally ignore this.

Given the rate of increase in the debt, it's not like this latest debt enabling law would have made a difference; it was a fait accompli. On the other hand, rates hitting 3% means that 100% of federal revenues are swallowed entirely by interest payments. Which means this is indeed a very real point of no return for the feds. Something's gotta give sooner than later.

Syrian-Israeli war? πŸ”—
1518259712

While it sounds like Israel was backing down yesterday, it sounds like they're still retaliating. I suspect different factions in the Israeli state are having something of a power struggle here.

UPDATE: There's now suspicion that the timing of the US attack last week is not coincidental. Meanwhile, the Russian fleet moves into Lebanon. A very, very dangerous game is being played -- but hey, I suspect they'll need a war to keep people's mind off the coming crash & recession.
