"Everyone has the right to insult cops" πŸ”—

Meanwhile, the police insist they also have a right to rob/murder/enslave you at any time for any reason. Sounds like it will work out (haha)

Washington has ripped off the mask πŸ”—

Great essay by Dimitri Orlov. It's about time the world quit looking to Uncle Satan for leadership -- maybe, just maybe it will take globocop off the beat and we can have peace in the USA for a little while.

Pepe Escobar on world events πŸ”—

Tehran, Beijing, Moscow, Islamabad, and New Delhi have been actively establishing interlocking security guarantees. They have been simultaneously calling the Atlanticist bluff when it comes to the endless drumbeat of attention given to the flimsy meme of Iran’s β€œnuclear weapons program.” And a few days before the Vienna nuclear negotiations finally culminated in an agreement, all of this came together at a twin BRICS/SCO summit in Ufa, Russia β€” a place you’ve undoubtedly never heard of and a meeting that got next to no attention in the U.S. And yet sooner or later, these developments will ensure that the War Party in Washington and assorted neocons (as well as neoliberalcons) already breathing hard over the Iran deal will sweat bullets as their narratives about how the world works crumble.
I suspected this was behind the Obama admin. agreeing to peace with Iran; it finally has become too costly to do so, as they have real allies now.

FBI Accuses Chinese Government of Out-of-Control Economic Espionage πŸ”—

HAHAHAHAH! That's rich. Nobody can take Uncle Satan seriously after their dragnet surveillance of the entire world, and conducting economic espionage as a part of those operations.

The fundamental problem of chemistry πŸ”—
1437918260

Much of chemistry is about understanding the fundamental forces that operate within and between molecules. These forces come in different flavors: strong covalent bonds, weak and strong hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, weak multipolar interactions, hydrophobic effects. The net interaction or repulsion between two molecules results from the sum total of these forces, some of which may be attractive and others might be repulsive. Harness these forces and you can control the structure, function and properties of molecules ranging from those used for solar capture to those used as breakthrough anticancer drugs.

Here’s how the fundamental dilemma manifests itself in the control of all these interactions: it is next to impossible to perform controlled experiments that would allow one to methodically vary one of the interactions and see its effect on the overall behavior of the molecule. In a nutshell, the interactions are all correlated, sometimes intimately so, and it can be impossible to change one without changing the other.
And nobody wants to admit that we fundamentally do not exactly know what we are doing. If we do not accept this, we cannot then ask, well what IS the independent factor behind these other forces?

A Chicago investigator who determined that several civilian shootings by police officers were unjustified was fired after resisting orders to reverse those findings, according to internal records of his agency obtained by WBEZ.

WaPo on 'lawful orders' πŸ”—
1437917195

Comes close to stating what should be obvious -- resisting arrest is and always will be morally legitimate. No man can read minds; and a hitman could be unlawfully arrested for unrelated offenses just as an innocent could be arrested for murder.

Of course, for the antitdote to all legal foolishness, read Hasnas' "The myth of the rule of law".

A woman in tech that gets it πŸ”—
1437820953

Sticks and stones...
What I’ve got, and what I wish the rest of the β€œwomen in tech” community who rage against the misogyny they see everywhere they look could also have, is a blazingly single-minded focus on whatever topic I happen to be perseverating on at the moment. It has kept me awake for days puzzling out novel algorithms and it has thwarted a wannabe PUA at a conference completely by accident. It is also apparently the most crashingly successful defense against attempts to make me feel inferior that has ever been devised. When I’m someplace that says on the label that it’s all about the tech, so am I. I may have come by it naturally, but it is a teachable skill. Not only that, it’s a skill that transforms the places where it’s exercised.
What the professional feminists see as evidence of misogny, e.g. the general hostility to talking about non-tech subjects, is really just classical technical irritation at irrelevancies.

Even the guys who spend their time moaning about wimmins in the clubhouse are generally considered asshats and blowhards; they slowly become marginalized due to complaining eating up time they could have spent programming.
